Not the best days for football but we found ourselves at home again for the second week against our old foes Arnold Town. The game kicked off in misty conditions and the football matched the weather. The game was very scrappy with patches of decent football being hard to come by on a very heavy pitch.
With corners being a constant threat, after 9 minutes the ball was delivered again into the danger area and with the ball not being cleared the ball finally fell to Georgia who coolly lobbed the ball over the keeper and into the net to open the scoring. The lead only lasted for four minutes though, with a long ball in towards the edge of the Woodlands area, the ball somehow found its way through a few players and was whipped into the top corner of the net.
The half time team talk really centred around the girls getting the ball down and playing. We struggled in the first half to work the ball wide and use our pace but in the second half we eventually played a bit better and after 17 minutes Georgia unleashed a bullet shot that crashed off the bar and down onto the line. Fortunately the ball was half cleared to Saffy who smashed the ball into the net to settle nerves. The game settled down then for a while but with a few changes in personnel the girls gained the upper hand and on 29 minutes Emily whipped in an inch perfect cross for Georgia to apply a perfectly placed volley into the back of the net o put the girls in a comfortable position.
Looking like the game would end at 3-1 the girls kept pressing and eventually the pressure told with the ball being driven goalwards and the unfortunate Arnold defender had the ball strike her arm and a penalty was awarded. Katie M placed the ball and on the whistle drove the ball high into the net to settle the game.
Annie : Not a prayer with the goal but overall a performance we have come to expect from you. You were not busy for long periods of the game again this week but when you are called upon, you are reliable and learning every week.
Chelsea : You have come a long way as I know you may have not wanted to play a year ago but now you have found you best position and enjoyment in the game again. Hearing you had landed on your head whilst trampolining was not good. You gave it everything you had for us as always.
Lucy P : I am sure the break we now have from league action will do your knee some good. As ever, you put yourself on the line for the team and at one point played on the right wing !!!!! as ever a captains performance.
Ashley : I decided to go with a back three today but when you were called upon as ever you played with a certain quality and composure. You always looked to get the ball down and play your way out of trouble, which is a great quality. Very deserved player of the match today.
Bex : Really well done on your 100th game for the club. You have been a credit to the team and as I said today you and peggy have formed a remarkable partnership. You played very well again today and seem to be getting on top of your asthma, which will only help you further with your footie. Well done
Katie W : By your own admission, I think you found it hard to hit any form before halftime but as we have come to expect, you don’t have two bad halves and played your way back into the game in the second half and helped win the midfield battle.
Saffy : Another solid performance from you again today, worked hard in the midfield for the side and again more than deserved your goal and when it came you dispatched it very well.
Amy : Good performance out wide today and in the defence when you moved back in there. You always give it everything and today was no exception. You are becoming a very good utility player for us and every great team has at least one of those.
Katie M : Finding yourself on the bench today I needed to see a reaction and when you got the nod to come on you gave a controlled performance that we needed to steady the ship. You worked hard closing the ball down and showed a cool head when taking the spot kick.
Georgia : We have a laugh about your goal scoring but to play nine and have scored twelve, you are doing something right. I would say that you put a real shift in today and turned in your best showing to date. Two cracking goals and a defensive side to your game, that has come on no end. Well worth your player of the match.
Emily : It was a tough battle in the centre of the park today but eventually you three in there, got on top which was key to the result. You were a constant threat from set pieces and was unlucky not to register today.
Hannah : I am aware that you didnt get long on the pitch today but as always your response was exactly what I expected. Your confidence has grown no end recently and you hold the ball up so well now which is a good attribute to have.
Robyn : Never let the team down and today was no different. You worked your socks off for the team in a variety of positions today and showed real quality in every one of them. We are very fortunate to have a few players that are comfortable in various positions and you fit that bill.
Grace : It was a really hard place to come off the bench and into midfield today. You gave it all you had and at half time listened to what we all had to say and you really upped your game in the last 15 minutes which helped today gain the result.
Lucy W : You gave the team everything that we asked for today. Quite rightly you were frustrated by not having the service but your role today was to hassle and frustrate the backline of Arnold which you did. Its a thankless task up there doing the dirty work but its a team game and today everyone did their job which you did for me today and warranted your player of the match
I think its fair to say that Arnold were always in the game and were unlucky to concede four goals today I thought. We will i am sure play much better and lose the game but sometimes thats how it goes.
Although it wasn’t our finest game today you all worked really hard in the second half to secure 3 points from a good side who I am sure will be right up there in the final shake up
Many thanks as always to everyone who gave us their support today, we eventually found some form but as always you pulled something extra out the bag to gain the 3 points.
Big thanks to Alan for reffing to his usual very high standard and setting up the pitch etc.
Thanks to Martin who had a busy day reffing and then running the line for us again.
Proud of you as always girls, you have a knack of pulling out that extra bit when required.
