With the sun shining, we set off very early on our away trip to Retford. Having lost goalkeeper Annie and Emily from midfield overnight through illness, the girls knew they would have to dig deep to get a result against a very strong Retford side.
The game got underway with Woodlands straight on the attack. We started with an attacking 3-5-2 formation and it wasn't long before we got in behind Retford but found their keeper in great form. Much of the play in the first 15 minutes was in the Retford half but this proved to be our undoing. With a long clearance, Retford forced their way through and with a cool finish, found themselves in the lead. This seemed to spark the girls into life and from the kick off, Katie M recieved the ball in her own half, took on four Retford players, before firing hard and low across the keeper for an instant reply. From then on the game swung from end to end, and from a Retford corner which the girls failed to clear, the ball was forced into the net to give Retford the advantage at half time.
With a few changes at half time, the girls started the second half slowly but forced a couple of early corners. From a break down the right, Bex played into Mia, who found Katie M, after a turn outside the ball was wipped into the box, where Lucy W smashed it home for the equaliser. This was met by the biggest cheer of the day, having worked very hard on her game, since deciding to give up goalkeeping, it was always going to be a special moment when she scored and it was. With a bit of belief, the girls then pushed hard to take charge, and from another great corner, the ball was hooked over the keepers head by Saff to make the score 3-2. The girls then had to stand up to some more pressure from Retord and Charlotte had to pull off another great save down to her right to keep the girls in it. Having weathered the storm, the ball was played out to Mia on the right, who played in Katie M, who turned inside and curled her shot, left footed into the far post to seal the game.
Many thanks to Retford for their hospitality, they have a great set of players who deserved more from the game today for their efforts.
Thanks to Charlotte for her attitude, having received the call to go in goal, as always she accepted, got on with it and played superbly well, on what was her 50th game for the club.
Ashley, Bex, Lucy P, you were really good again today, especially in the second half.
Mia, Aimee, Katie W, Amy I, Grace, Saff and Robyn, showed some steel when required and worked very hard for your side again.
Katie M and Lucy, ran yourselves into the ground and managed to nick some goals between you both.
Hope Annie and Emily are feeling better, get yourselves fit for next weekend, we need the whole team back together.
