Woodlands FC Ladies first game since the 13.12.2009 due to the dreadful weather. Radcliffe in the mean time have managed to get in 2 emphatic victories.
Woodlands got off to the worst possible start, when Sophie was beaten to the ball by Radcliffe's centre forward in the very first minute, catching the forward with her knee to leave the referee with no option but to point to the spot. However Woodlands were to be let off the hook as Radcliffe's penalty taker fired the ball well wide.
The first 15 minutes were frenetic with Radcliffe piling forward, Woodlands defending desperately. However Woodlands started to settle down and Nicci twice went close, first with a run down the left, she cut in and fired a shot just wide of the far post. The second opportunity was even better, Chloe T fired the ball forward and Nicci broke clear of the defence only to see her goal bound effort tipped around the post. The two Chloe's & Betty at the back along with Sophie were outstanding, keeping a high quality team with lots of possession down to few goalscoring efforts. Woodlands were rocked by a bad injury to the influential Shannon , this injury looked a bad one & Shannon was to play no further part in the game.
Amy & Antonia were working hard in midfield and were doing a really good job stifling a very strong Radcliffe team.
All Woodlands efforts appeared to be in vain on 60 minutes, when Radcliffe were awarded a penalty when the forward slipped when trying to turn in the box. But Radcliffe again failed to convert the penalty this time firing past the keepers left hand post.
Woodlands were now playing their best football of the match but cruely fell behind on 72 minutes when a Radcliffe strikers deflected effort lefy Sophie in goal with no chance.
Woodlands pushed forward but Nicci rushed her shot when in a good position and the ball slipped just wide of the post.
After 6 weeks without a game, Woodlands showed what a great team spirit they have. Radcliffe are a quality team and Woodlands can feel very proud of the effort that on this occasion was not rewarded with a point.
