After a weeks break, Woodlands were at home for the second time, and like our first home game Woodlands were to find the opposition in resilient mood. Unlike Woodlands Flowserve have got off to a tough start to the season, but were presented with a goal in the very first minute, when a miscommunication in the defence saw Frankie Watson's back pass leave Sophie Dyson pennyless and picking the ball out of her own net.
When Sophie Beresford scored her first goal for Woodlands after 5 minutes after a superb run by Hollie Peat, one could have been forgiven for thinking the script was written for an emphatic Woodlands victory. However that was not to be the case. Flowserve defended spiritedly & when the Woodlands forwards did break through Flowserves keeper was magnificent making excellent saves with her feet in the first half from Claire Waring & Hayley Merritt. The second half continued in a similar vain with Woodlands dominating possesion but Flowserve were magnificent at the back with club captain Mary-Ellen Barras particularly outstanding. As the game wore on it didn't look like Woodlands would score the elusive winner with first Shannon Ryan fireing an unstoppable shot against the bar, Nicci Stevenson having a shot from 6 yards out blocked on the line & both Ryan & Nicole Dainty fireing shots just wide of the post.
Fortunately Frankie Watson's luck was about to change when with injury time looming she fired an unstoppable shot from fully 40 yards over the Flowserve keeper and into the roof of the net to give Woodlands the lead and deep into injury time Nicci Stevenson turned just outside the box to make sure of the points with a lovely finish into the far corner to give Woodlands the 3 points.
Manager Terry Stevenson was full of praise for the Flowserve team and admitted that his team were fortunate in the end to pick up all the points.
